Visual Art in the Islamic world
In this course, we will explore a wide range of Islamic visual arts across various fields, such as religious and secular architecture, miniature art, painting, and Arabic calligraphy. Additionally, we will examine decorated manuscripts with miniatures from the Middle Ages, emphasizing the relationship between text and imagery. These topics aim to give students a critical perspective on Islamic material culture in all its aspects throughout different periods of Islamic rule. The course is designed to offer a new understanding of Islamic art and culture, as well as methods of applying cultural and ideological knowledge. The content largely relies on theoretical readings of academic articles in Arabic that discuss selected issues related to Islamic art across different eras. Overall, the course seeks to foster a critical view of developments in Islamic art and culture and the ways it can be used to transmit cultural and ideological knowledge.
