Dr. Helena Čapková is a Tokyo/ Kyoto/Prague based curator, researcher, and art/ architecture history professor at Ritsumeikan University, Kyoto. Since 2010, she has published and lectured extensively about Japanese modernism and avant garde that she considers as an inherent part of art history, traditionally perceived as Western. Her publications on this topic include: Transnational networkers – Iwao and Michiko Yamawaki and the formation of Japanese Modernist Design (2014), Believe in socialism … - architect Bedřich Feuerstein and his perspective on modern Japan and architecture (2016); English-Japanese publication – Antonin Raymond in Japan, 1948-1976, recollections of friends (2022) and Bedřich Feuerstein, architect. Prague-Paris-Tokyo (2022).

Japanese modernism is an inherently transnational phenomenon, a fabric woven together by many Japanese and non-Japanese creators. The hybrid nature comes out very clearly in the work of Japanese urban thinker and architect with anthropological training Kon Wajiro (1888-1973), for example in his magnum opus Kogengaku-Modernology (first published in installments in the mid-1920s). Among many aspects of Japanese modernity-modernism, Kon was fascinated by fashion, interior design, design in general and in the ways Japanese cities and peripheries were changing around newly developed infrastructures and under the influence of ideas coming top down from elites exploring and importing foreign phenomena and standards. This lecture will explore Kon's texts in the contexts of contemporary Japanese design and architectural creativity.
